I agree with you on “agency and complex identities before healing.” I teach Genelin’s Focusing and people need to have the agency to stay with their felt sense (physical sensations and the more) or not, or even to be able to Clear a Space as Gendlin called it, a way of putting our worries down beside us so we can have the space to be with one thing at a time. As we do that, our complex identities are in action: there is the welcoming us being with whatever else in us needs to be felt (that can be stressed or hurt, etc.) And once we have those, a felt shift happens, in other words healing :)

Hello Brian,

I am generally displeased with the algorithmic pushing of content from people I don't know at me on this or any site - but I am pleased to have come across this essay! I find a lot of shared sense-making here. This phrasing/framing of the distinction between objective powerlessness and the experience of powerlessness will be useful to me, at least in how I understand dynamics I observe around me (I'm pretty sure that telling someone directly they may be experiencing this discrepancy would often have reactive results).

My passion is in dialogue & bridging as well, and I've felt alienated in the activism scene for years due to differences in strategy (fighting vs transforming - I also skimmed your other post about letting go of "fight" as a lens for activism - nice). Currently I am involved with a Community of Practice for practitioners of the "Listening Arts" - facilitation, mediation, bridge-building. It seems in some alignment with your approach. If you would ever like to join, there's more info here: https://www.ncdd.org/communityofpractice.html.

I have been following your blog for years now and there is so much here that I resonate with. I wanted to offer the space for us to be in conversation by offering a piece I did from this end of the world that echoes your ruminations on victimhood and power. If it calls to please do have a a look. https://jabsc.org/index.php/jabsc/article/view/6945

Such thoughtful inquiry and insight

Thank you. Would love to see a tier of support that is more basic—e.g. $36 per year. Thanks for all that you offer!

I would love to see more on the empowerment triangle. What would the shredded drama triangle look like when flipped with the same dynamics that you show at the beginning of the article?
