Hi Brian, I too believe in gift economy principles and I actively hold space and co-organize with others who do as well. I'm interested in visiting with you and your group as well because I envision an interconnected network of us finding and sharing our gifts with one another.
The story that I am telling myself concerning upgrading to a paid subscription in order to join you is that I too have a Substack platform that is free for all to enjoy whether they choose a paid subscription or not. And that I'd rather exchange "paid access" to one another should you find value in what we write about at Sustainable Solutions Media.
I'm also experiencing some dissonance around paying to join a "gifts economy" gathering because I think about the gifts economy being the exchange of energy and resources outside of money. And lastly because I co-organize a similar space at no charge, it would be weird for me to pay to join yours.
Thank you for the invitation to share my thoughts vulnerably. Wishing you all the best!
I very much feel and co- hold the tension you are naming here. I wanted to create an opportunity for people to support my work... and at present money is the easiest way people can gift outside of relationship. I am always happy to offer a complimentary subscription to anyone who wants to join the gatherings but cannot or chooses not to get a "paid" subscription: I just shared a comp with you, and hope to see you in shared space soon!
